Sandy Creek State Land Forest

SANDY CREEK STATE LAND FOREST is located in the Town of Sandy Creek in Oswego County, New York State. It is 583 acres of mostly moderate to heavy forests of hardwoods and evergreens. Over 1 mile of Deer Creek runs through this state forest and is known to have trout and the occasional steelhead for sport fishing. The state forest is accessible from Cummings Road a town road located west off County Route 48 and is only 5 minutes from Exit 37 (Sandy Creek, NY Exit) from Interstate Route 81.

The name of DEER CREEK is appropriate because of the high whitetail deer population that inhabits these secluded woods. Many wild birds also live here and it is common to see wild turkey, hawks as well as osprey.

Folks who enjoy Sandy Creek State Forest love the abundant wildlife and like the many other resources near this forest. Within 10 minutes there is over 20,000 acres of other state land forests as well as white sand beaches of Lake Ontario. Within 10 minutes you have Winona State Forest, Little John State Forest and Salmon River State Land Forests. The neighboring private woods are well suited for establishing a family vacation cabin in the woods, or a hunting camp or a snowmobile lodge.

In 2007 available lands bordering this forest onthe southeast side weere quickly purchased by smart outdoor recreationalist, and now land bordering the north side of the forest are available for sale. Waterfront Property in New York State

Waterfront Property in New York State means many different things.

Property on a New York lake, ocean, pond, river or even a trout stream can be classified as waterfront. Others describe waterfront as lakefront, beachfront, riverfront, streamfront. Some people even lengthen these names to waterfrontage or harborfrontage. You will see waterfront names within real estate listings or land descriptions sometimes broken up into two words like water front or lake front.

New York Cabins

Nothing better than a rustic cabin deep in the woods of New York State.

In winter you snowshoe, cross-country ski or snowmobile to the cabin. In spring you head up to the cabin for trout fishing and some canoeing. In the summer you escape the heat within the cabin and shade of the big forests. Of course in fall the cabin is a place to enjoy NY autumn colors, deer hunting and salmon fishing. Cabins in upstate NY are used for many activities or often used for just plain rest and relaxation.

New York cabins exist in many shapes, sizes, and makes. New stick built cabins on piers are very popular in upstate NY. Often the roofs are metal (green or brown colored metal) to allow the snow to slide off when the winter sun shines. Many cabins in NY will have a deck, patio or porch for relaxing outside.

My top 10 beaches in New York have outstanding public areas with tons to do and see. The sand, clear water and beach activities are just the beginning. Besides beaches, you will find other summer things to do and unique land features sometimes known only to the area and NY State.

Step back to into the future. A retro 1950’s style village complete with kid’s amusement park and family dinners, colorful motels and friendly shops seemingly from America’s golden age. Very reasonable prices (I mean CHEAP). Very popular with bikers, boaters, families, and young people. It’s unique, fun and somewhat undiscovered. If you need basic lodging you'll find it here, but if you want upscale lodging you better book ahead at "The Lodge Hotel" at Turning Stone Casino, 20 minutes down I-90 off the NYS Thurway.

Golf, camp, and boat this place has everything, a hidden gem. Just Google Earth the location and you will not believe the dunes, water, forests and greenery. Simple comforts like marina, B&B’s and a few shops nearby; but still very secluded.

Amazing Adirondack High Peak Mountains encircle this forested lake. This is a postcard setting, simply unreal. When the water is not frozen it is still very cold. Rent canoes and hit lakeside restaurants and taverns. Look at the many area websites of the hotels on Lake Placid and Mirror Lake. They hosted the World Olympics twice for a reason! It is that nice … never a disappointment.

Summer traffic to here and other Long Island Beaches can be the worst on plant Earth. You may want to leave on a Wednesday at 3 AM, own a helicopter or be able to go during off season. All the Long Island beaches are worth at least one visit in a lifetime. I always had the good fortune of staying with close friends or family when on L.I. So on lodging your on your own, there is usually plenty, just book well ahead and prepare for expensive.

Sandy Island Beach was private but recently became public. Accessible by car, but get a good map. You can boat to “boater’s beach” just north of Sandy Island Beach, and can walk to most of the beaches from the endless shoreline from the public area. Please be careful of the dunes and posted-off areas. Locals are very good about protecting the dune enviroment. This Great Lake area has been voted Top 3 Sunsets in the world repeatedly by international travel magazines. The location also features world-class freshwater sports fishing boasting several Salmon and Trout world records. Sandy Island Beach, NY features the only significant freshwater dune site in the northeastern United States according to New York State DEC. A must see on the top ten list. B&B's, campgrounds and cabin lodges are close by, but hotel/motel lodging is limited, the area is still secluded – Syracuse NY or Watertown, NY are best bets for national motel/hotel overnight stays. Then again many of these New York beaches on my list are away from the beaten path and makes more part of the fun.

Camping in Upstate New York

The word "camping" means different things to different people.

Camping to kids might be heading upstate to summer vacation camp. For some "camping" is a small tent, light backpack and heading into the New York woods to sleep under the stars. Camping to others means filling up the SUV or Truck with outdoor gear and hitting the Adirondacks, Catskills or other Upstate NY Regions while lodging at random rustic cabins. Still others find "Camping" to mean RV or Pop-up campers for use in the many NY state public parks and private campgrounds.

Many of these "Campers" may have their very own private land they "Camp" on.

Welcome to New York Land Blog and our first New York Land post!

Late summer in New York State always brings us all out to the water and in 2009 is no different. The August heat has us all heading to the lake or beach. Heck, a nice cool swimming hole or a cold mountain pond always works too. Wherever you are we hope you are keeping cool. And Welcome to New York Land Blog.

Please allow me introduce myself. My name is Chris Ellis for over 40 years, I have lived, worked (and vacationed) all over New York State. Born in St. Lawrence County, New York I have lived and worked in over 20 other New York Counties in the areas of rural land development mostly with waterfront and lakes. Some of the interesting places New York places I have lived and/or worked include: Lake Placid, Manhattan (Lincoln Center), Salmon River, Lake Ontario, Allegheny County NY, Saratoga and many other New York lakes, towns, cities and areas. I am a Graduate of Syracuse University with a Business Marketing Degree and a recent Graduate from University of Dallas; also a Licensed Real Estate Broker in New York State, Texas State and own a NY land development company since 1998 called LandFirstNY.
